In modern era of 20th century, everyone is aware of world’s largest online streaming platform YouTube, but very few people know about its history, its origin and chronology. Today we will know about history, chronology, emergence and evolution of YouTube over a period of time.
History of YouTube
Knowing about history of YouTube, world’s 2nd largest search engine, we have to go to flashback to year 2004-05. YouTube was started by 3 ex employees of America’s E-commerce company Paypal namely Steve Chen, Hurley & Jawed Karim. As every big invention is just a solution to a big problem, YouTube was no exception to it. The problem was searching and sharing a video.
It was earlier days of year 2005, when a birthday party was organised in the apartment of Steve Chen and Jawed Karim by somehow missed the party and was eager to see videos of the party, but couldn’t see, just because of lack of video sharing platform on internet.
Another incidence of lack of video searching platform also motivates these three to think of YouTube. In 2004, Jawed Karim was searching a controversial video of Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson in Google but hardly found any source for watching that video. This leads him to think that there may be so many videos people wanted to search or explore, but couldn’t see just because no video searching or online streaming platform is available to them.
The other two partners were thinking of Tsunami. They thought that whenever something big happens, someone must have recorded those moments in their smart phones, but couldn’t share those moments with world due to lack of video searching or online streaming platform.
All these three incidents lead to concept of YouTube. In short we can say that concept of YouTube was a solution of video sharing problem. Since then YouTube has never looked back and revolutionized the world of Internet.
Interesting to note that prior to YouTube, its founder started an online dating website “tune in hook up”, but failure of this website leads to origin of YouTube.
YouTube was created as platform instead of a project just like Facebook, Watsapp and Google etc. Initially YouTube was not started to earn profit but as a solution to video sharing problems.
It was 14th February 2005, when domain of YouTube was registered for the first time. It was 23rd April 2005, when Jawed Karim, one among the founders, who uploaded first ever video on YouTube titled “me at zoo” recorded in San Diego Zoo by Jawed Karim. YouTube’s initial office was setup in California over a restaurant in Saint Diego.
Chronology/Timeline
Since its origin YouTube has undergone many changes over a period of time. Some of the important events that occurred in history of YouTube are mentioned below in chronological order:
- YouTube got its investors between Nov. 2005 to April 2006 and got 11.5 million dollars investment.
- In Nov. 2005, a company named Sequoia Capital invested 3.5 million dollars.
- YouTube was launched officially in December 2005.
- It was October 2006, when Google decided to capture YouTube.
- Google officially captured YouTube in November 2006.
- Deal was final between two giant market leaders for $1.65 Billion.
- In the year 2006, video upload limit in YouTube was only 10 minutes.
- In May 2007, YouTube started partner program based on Google Ad sense. 45% of profit booked by YouTube and 55% is shared with its Content Creators.
- In 2008, YouTube introduced 480Pixels upload option.
- In 2009, YouTube introduced upload options of 720 and 1080 Pixels.
- In the next year 2010, YouTube introduced 4K video quality option.
- In 2010, YouTube started online streaming and broadcasted about 60 IPL matches.
- In March 2010, its user interface was changed to make it more user-friendly.
- In 2011, YouTube video watch time reaches 48Hrs/Minute & 64Hrs/Minute in Jan 2012.
- From 2015 onwards, YouTube introduced 360 degree video option.
- In 2017, 400 hrs per minute videos were uploaded on YouTube.
- As per the latest survey, it was claimed that whenever a viewer comes to watch a video, they watches at least 7 more videos. 22% of the viewers watches 14 videos instead of one video.
Since origin, YouTube getting better and better with each passing day. YouTube provides opportunities to millions of people to upload and share their videos on its platform. One can easily find solutions to their problems by watching videos from video library.
As per Google CEO (Sunder Pichai) “YouTube will be far bigger than TV”.
In YouTube, you are content creator as well as content viewer. You can run YouTube by choice not by chance. Viewers are getting free content on YouTube. The online streaming platform YouTube gives you the power to watch from anywhere and share your opinions through comments.
Out of 7.5 billion world population, 2 billion are active users of YouTube, this is the reason many advertisers are now shifting towards YouTube. YouTube is selling what viewers want to see and acts as an ecosystem where content creators, content viewers and advertisers interact. YouTube is attracting advertisers across the globe as there is huge cost of advertisements on TV. Large brands are now a day’s also shifting towards YouTube as target audience is clearer on YouTube. Cheap Cost of customer acquisition on YouTube. From revenue generated from advertisements, it has now become easier for YouTube to pay to its content creators in the form of monetization.
YouTube is helping its content creators by providing detail analysis of content viewers in the form of Psychographic, Demographic, Geographic, Ethnographic, Country, number of People, Men or women, Age, time, where, average watch time etc Analysis.
